Mooring by the Maple Bridge at Night Zhang Ji
The moon’s setting amid the caws of crows,
the sky frosted over in whole;
Fronting riveside maple
and fishing fires lies a sad soul.
The Cold Mountain Temple
is outside the Gusu City –
To the guest boat comes its midnight toll.

Seeing Meng Haoran Off at Yellow Crane Tower Li Bai
My dear friend, on the west side of
Yellow Crane Tower you bid me adieu:
Amid the third month’s mist and flowers,
downstream to Yangzhou you go.
Into the blue horizon,
the distant shadow of a lone sail vanishes;
Towards the sky,
only the Yangtze River is seen to flow.

Yellow Crane Tower Cui Hao
Gone was the sage riding a yellow crane:
The Yellow Crane Tower is all that remained.
Never did the Yellow Crane return:
For a thousand years, white clouds waited in vain.
So vivid are the Yangtze and
the trees of Hanyang in the sun;
So lush the sweet grass on the Parrots Domain.
Where’s my hometown, now dusk is near?
On this misty river, sorrows reign.

Thoughts on a Night Journey Du Fu
Amid slender grass and
light breeze by the shore,
At night, is moored a tall-mast solitary sampan.
Above the big rolling river, the moon surges;
Over the boundless wild, the stars hang.
One shouldn’t come to fame
by virtue of his writings:
Old and sick, my retirement I should plan.
Drifting endlessly, what do I resemble?
A lone gull in between the sky and the land.

Climbing the Liuzhou City Tower, a Poem Sent to the Prefects of
Zhangzhou, Dingzhou, Fengzhou and Liangzhou
The tower on the city wall
adjourns the vast wilderness;
Endless are the sea and sky…
and the melancholy thoughts in my mind.
The scary wind
rocks the lotus-laden water;
The heavy rain
strikes the wall that’s vined.
Dense are the trees on the mountain ridge
blocking a thousand-mile view;
Like entrails, the rivers twist and wind.
We’ve all come to Bai Yue where
the people have tattoed bodies;
Blocked off from letters and news,
we’re each stuck in a village assigned.

Bird-Sing Brook Wang Wei
I’m at leisure as cassia flowers fall;
Still is the night
in the empty mountain of spring.
The rising moon
startles mountain birds:
At times, by the spring brook they sing.

Autumn Evening Du Mu
By the cold painted screen, silvery candles
flicker in autumn moonlight.
She hits at drifting fireflies,
with a silken fan small and light.
Cool as water is the night by the palace steps;
She lies down and both the Cowherd
and Weaver Girl come in sight.

Beyond the Frontier Wang Zhihuan
The Yellow River climbs
to the white clouds, far, far away;
Amid towering mountain,
a solitary city stays.
Why should the Tartar flute play
“Bemoaning the Willows”.
Never would the spring breezes
cross the Yu Men Gateway.

The Ornate Zither Li Shangyin
For no reason,
the ornate zither has fifty strings;
Each string with its fret
evokes recollection of a youthful spring.
Zhuangzi was baffled
by his dawn dream of being a butterfly;
The cuckoo was entrusted
with the tender soul of a king.
In the green sea under a bright moon,
tears would turn into pearls;
In Lantian under a warm sun,
rising mists the jade would bring.
Such feeling may be left to memories –
Only at the time it was a puzzling thing.

At Jiang Village Sikong Shu
Back from fishing,
my boat I didn’t tie.
The moon was setting over Jiang Village –
the best time in bed to lie.
Though drifting in the wind overnight,
Still I’m by the shallow water’s edge
with reed flowers nearby.
